Christian Slater is married!
The actor, 44, and his girlfriend of three years, Brittany Lopez, tied the knot during an impromptu ceremony Monday at the courthouse in Coral Gables, Fla., Slater’s rep confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.
The pair celebrated their engagement this summer with family and friends and had originally planned to have a small ceremony later in the year.
On Monday, they went to the Coral Gables District Court to get their marriage license and spontaneously decided to get married. Afterwards, the newlyweds had a court clerk snap a photo of them.
By TEXT BY JANE WOOLDRIDGE / PHOTOGRAPHY BY MORIS MORENO AT NORTH MIAMI’S MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART
Christian Slater is standing in a sleek black Lanvin suit in a psychedelic Summer of Love floor-to-ceiling flashback art installation when his cell phone rings. “Gotta grab this,” he says to the photo crew whose lens, lights, hair gel and attention are tightly trained on the actor, his second magazine cover shoot this week. “Hi Mark,” he says to what must surely be some high-powered press agent or executive of his soon-to-debut TV series Mind Games. The phone goes back in his pocket. “Sorry,” says the affable Slater. “Pool guy. Gotta catch him when you can.”
This is not exactly what you expect from a Hollywood household name whose alcohol-fueled rages in the ’90s landed him on the gossip pages for all the wrong reasons. After appearing on screens big ( The Name of the Rose, Interview with a Vampire, True Romance) and small ( The West Wing, Alias, Breaking In) and both Broadway and London’s West End, doesn’t he have people who deal with the everyday stuff? In L.A., yes. But in Miami, where he has lived largely under the radar for the past 2 1/2 years, the 44-year-old Slater is more likely to be slugging back a vente iced nonfat latte (four espresso shots, please) at the local Starbucks, driving around town in his black Jeep Wrangler or walking his pound-procured dog, Fish, down his quiet Coconut Grove lane than tap-dancing with executives, handlers and casting agents.
On this day he’s hanging out at North Miami’s Museum of Contemporary Art, where fiancé Brittany Lopez — who is herself quite a force — spent two years as director of corporate development before leaving earlier this month with plans to return to the art world this winter. After the shoot in the ceiling-to-floor installation by Brazilian art collective Assume Astro Vivid Focus that is part of MOCA’s permanent collection, the team moves Slater to a temporary exhibit of photos by Dawoud Bey. To create it, Bey brought together strangers living dramatically different lives in their common community. The juxtaposition seems oddly fitting for Slater, who himself is just finding his way in the city he now calls home.
Lopez is the reason he’s here. “I really scored, didn’t I?” he says between photo sets. He’s not talking about her lean beauty, so obvious that it shines through her no-makeup T-shirt-and-shorts appearance when she dashes to the museum with last-minute items for the shoot. At 26, Lopez has already developed the kind of self-assured competence that comes to most people decades later, if at all. “She’s helped me so much.”
She — and Miami — are just the L.A. antidote he didn’t know he needed.
“The great thing about being out of L.A. is having the distance between show business and my life,” he says a few days later, sitting in the dining room of their new house. “If you’re in L.A. you’re constantly inundated by the entertainment business. It’s crazy, and you can’t escape it. … ere, I’m pretty removed. I’m in a lush tropical area surrounded by water. I feel safe, I can go to the store, shop. It’s a much more comfortable atmosphere for me.”
He still travels frequently to Los Angeles; to Louisiana to shoot Hot Tub Time Machine II, which releases next summer; to Moscow for a film festival; to Chicago, where Mind Games is set. Nymphomaniac, directed by Lars Von Trier in Europe, is due out in March. “You go where the work is,” he says.

The voice cast includes Armie Hammer as Strong Arm, the superhero with super strength; Christian Slater as Lazer Lord, the superhero who hurls balls of laser energy; Mayim Bialik as Lady Lightning who possesses super speed; Teri Hatcher as Silver Skylark, the superhero who flies; Flea as Roller Man, who rolls into a big ball and launches at high speed; Darren Criss as Micro, who shrinks in size; and Sean Austin as Kid Kinergy who’s superpower is telekinesis. Additional voices include Jim Belushi as Mr. Cross, the leader of a covert operations military division assigned to investigate UFO sightings; and Michael Ironside as Xanar, the leader of the warring aliens from the planet Taegon who enslave other planets and raid their natural resources.
The cast introduction included a sneak peak of the trailer for the upcoming movie trilogy which you can watch below. The presentation was made by Stan Lee as both the creator of SLAM 7 and CCO of POW! Entertainment, and Andy Heyward, CEO of A Squared Entertainment.
“SLAM 7 is the first reality style comic books series and the first superhero project from Stan Lee Comics. We’re combining fantasy and reality, comedy and adventure for a superhero series unlike anything I’ve created before,” said Lee in his introduction of the cast. “These incredible actors have brought these alien superheroes to life even better than I could have imagined…if that’s even possible!”
The SLAM 7 trilogy begins with three feature-length films, a monthly comic book and an animated television series thereafter, to debut in 2015. The Hub Network has the world premiere of all three movies starting with the first movie, Beginnings, in early 2014. Cinedigm will release a DVD and Digital release in the U.S. in summer 2014.
Stan Lee makes his animation film debut, giving voice to an animated version of himself in a starring role. In the story, Stan Lee is hired by Archie Comics to create a new group of superheroes. He finds himself stumped with writer’s block and heads to the desert to clear his mind. When seven aliens suddenly crash land near him and start demonstrating their various superpowers, he decides, “Perfect! They will be come my next superheroes!” But almost instantly, he realizes they are being chased by the military and aliens from their own planet, and he needs to act quickly. He makes the decision to have them move into his house in Malibu where he will teach them everything they need to know about being superheroes. Comedy and adventure ensue as the aliens try to adapt to life on earth, and their new roles as superheroes, all the while running for their lives.

Information about Christian’s character:
Power: Hurls Bolts of Laser Energy
He has a dangerous, bad attitude. He was accused of killing a professor at the Star Marshal Academy, and he escaped from prison to become a vigilante, fighting the corrupt and powerful. To this day, he swears that he is innocent. Lazer Lord is always second guessing Strong Arm’s decisions and thinks he should be in charge. He’s confident with women and likes to flirt with Silver Skylark because he knows it angers Strong Arm. But he’ll soon find himself genuinely attracted to her.

The story behind “Love Stories Are Too Violent for Me” is almost as compelling as the novel.
In 1995, startup publisher Wild Card Press published Will Viharo’s pulp fiction thrill ride about Detective Vic Valentine. While there were plans to publish a sequel, “Love Stories” was the only book Wild Card ever published. Its owners had also owned Oakland’s Parkway Speakeasy Theater.
“Once the Parkway venture took off and proved to be much more lucrative, they dropped the press,” Viharo says.
Viharo joined the Parkway Speakeasy as a programmer and publicist. Once a month, he hosted Thrillville, an event that featured B movies, exploitation and science fiction films, as well as burlesque performances. The idea behind Thrillville was to promote “Love Stories.”
“The idea was to make me a local celebrity so my name cachet alone would sell the book,” says Viharo, who has since published eight other books, five of which are part of the Valentine series.
Viharo still programs films as Thrillville for the New Parkway in Oakland. “Love Stories,” though, eventually went out of print – but the book found an unlikely savior in actor Christian Slater, who discovered the book in a Los Angeles bookstore in 2001 and “immediately related to it.”
Slater optioned the novel, adapted the book to a screenplay, and is slated to star in and direct the film adaptation. (The film is in development.)
The book is in print again, thanks to the pulp fiction press Gutter Books. Along with the reprint, the storyboard artist for the film adaptation drew the cover of the book, and Slater is now on the cover as Valentine.
“It’s just one of those things, it’s kismet. You put these books out, and they’re like little notes in a bottle on a desert island somewhere, and they’re drifting out to sea, and you never know who’s going to pick them up,” Viharo says.
“This one happened to be picked up by a movie star who wants to make a movie out of it.”
